SafeScoot Training

SafeScoot

Click on the link above to see the poster advertising scooter training for people who use mobility scooters.  You don’t have to own one to do the training but with deaths involving mobility scooters on the increase year by year, this training is worth thinking about.

Digital Switchover Event

On February 1st the DRC in partnership with the Reaching Out Project held an information event which included a presentation, question and answer session and a drop-in.

The event aimed to give service users and the local community information about the Digital Switchover in London during April of this year. Including information on how to contact the help scheme and who was eligible for low or no cost help with installing equipment.

It was very well attended and the feedback from people attending showed how useful the event had been and everyone enjoyed the day.

The DRC has an information stall in the main hall for people who still need the information and a member of staff is always on hand to answer questions about the switchover.

Christmas at the DRC

Welcome to the New Year at the DRC

Welcome back everyone, I know it can be difficult to get back into the routine of normal life after the fun and excesses of the Christmas and New Year celebrations but it is surprising how quickly life does get back to normal.

We are all looking forward to an exciting year, on our return to work we had a letter saying that we had been successful in applying for a small amount of money to help us and Disability Action to put on an event informing people about the Digital Switchover which is happening this year so keep an eye out for the information on the event which will be advertised in the centre and in newsletters and on our website.

Another exciting bit of news we had was that we had been accepted by the pilotlight board.  Pilotlight is a scheme which helps voluntary organisations to gain skills in business planning by having mentors called Pilotlighters from all walks of the business world to help achieve this.  It is going to be hard work but we hope it will enable us to improve the Centre.

Remember if you have any news you want to let others know about please contact the office and we can see if we can include it on the website.

New Management Committee Elected

On Saturday 5 November the Disability Resource Centre held its first Annual General Meeting at its new premises, 90 Crownfield Road.  The event was well attended and the Mayor chaired the meeting after the Management Committee stood down.

James O’Rourke, a long standing friend of the Centre scrutinised the counting of the votes; whilst this was taking place Emily Barber from the 2012 team gave a presentation on the Olympics and the possible effects it would have on the provision of services at the Centre due to the increase in traffic in the area.

The Mayor then announced the results of the vote, the following members were elected to the Management Committee:

Heather Gower, Michael Gower, Mohammed Salah-ud-Din, Jane Downs, Michael Allen,  Anne Green, Cathy Selby, Gill Rogers, Norma Mitchell.
